Propelled Forward
11.24.2010
Sometimes when you have already given up on an idea or project, it happens someone else comes and picks it up along the way, propelling you forward with fresh energies and new ideas to boot.
First it was the Czech people picking up on my game ‘Blobbit‘ and now the Japanese, or rather their magazine ‘MacPeople‘ have decided to one-up them and have some small feature about my game ‘Earth is a 3D Planet‘ in their printed issue. To say that I was elated would be a severe understatement.
In the meanwhile I was already working, or rather at that point, plodding along, on my new game, ‘Invaders: Corruption‘. The game started out as not a game at all, but as design experiment on generative shapes and forms, their readability and implications on logo design.
Even in the project’s early stages the computer generated shapes reminded me of space invaders a lot and thus the need to blast them back into oblivion was born. The remaining pieces kind of fell into place through the course of four eventful months.
So, during that time, I managed to recruit a sound designer and even a composer / musician, with whose help I managed to breathe life into—what was originally an idea to speed the first creative step of logo designs.
What can I say—once the first reactions came in, it suddenly was all worthwhile. Completely worthwhile!
Now for the propelling part—obviously I realized the benefits of synchronizing the games release with the magazine’s release date on November the 29th. This set deadline helped me to enormously speed up my development, draw energies where I thought there were none and basically bang out the game and it’s entire promotional package consisting of the official soundtrack, a micro-site and a trailer up until this point in a mere month’s time.
I didn’t think that this was possible to pull such a stunt alongside, what was already a demanding work-life but somehow I managed to pull it off, admittedly at the expense of sleep and some relations.
Okay, showtime, I guess – here’s the microsite, containing trailers downloads and a wealth of information on the game itself.
PS: I realize that this is a lot of talk about games, on what aims to be a design blog, but then again, it’s also design and—honestly, I would love to add some website work to my portfolio, but a certain client keeps forestalling the release and NDA does the rest.
All I can say is: soon.

I love this retro piece of goodness, congratulations, I hope the game gets all it’s much needed credit. ^_^
An extremely fun game to play, especially when you’ve only got 5 or 10 minutes available. The music suits it very well, and the retro style paired with the colorful effects make it visually stimulating as well. Thanks a lot for releasing it!
